This was inspired by a chance shuffling in my music player, which caused Tom Lehrer's Vatican Rag ("Two, four, six, eight, time to transubstantiate") to be followed by the Meteors' Walter Mitty Blues. (See below for both, if you're curious.) The above-quoted line from Lehrer provided the nucleus for the imagery, and the Meteors song provided a scaffolding (somewhat mangled by yours truly) to hang it on. And the final four lines are stolen shamelessly without alteration.
I dreamed of people who perverted
mercy into human sacrifice.
I dreamed they knelt and they prayed
to a symbol of a bloody torture device.
I dreamed of a choir of children,
singing the praises of a monstrous Power.
I dreamed of the sick and the homeless,
going hungry while the church built another bell-tower.
I dreamed a procession of people
queued to take a gulp of human blood.
I dreamed they ate a man's flesh—
a horrifying orgy of cannibal love.
I dreamed of a man with a gun—
an expression of loathing and hate on his face.
I dreamed he wanted to kill me
for denying that blood-lust should be called grace.
I dreamed of a Hell on Earth,
inspired by a dream of an afterlife.
I dreamed of crimes beyond measure,
excused by a fantasy of Paradise.
I dreamed that this was all real.
I dreamed that this was my life.
I dreamed I was the only sane one living.
When I dreamed, I couldn't open my eyes.
