Elements of this post have been bubbling up in my head for some time now. Well the bubble finally erupted to the surface.

I expect we've all heard by now of the murder of three Muslims, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. First and foremost, let me say that my thoughts are, as any decent person's should be, with the family and friends of Deah Shaddy Barakat, Yusor Mohammad and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha. To lose three loved ones at the same time is tragedy enough. To lose them in such a fashion can only, I suspect, be worse, and to lose them at such a young age, with almost their entire lifetimes ahead of them, worse yet.

The murders were, ostensibly, over a parking space. I say 'ostensibly' because, frankly, I don't believe it. I thoroughly believe that such an argument may have been the tipping point, and may well go down as the official cause, but life, and sadly all too often death, is never that simple. (more…)

To The Islam-Obsessed

This post is not aimed at my regular readers, or at others who address religious issues on a regular basis. It is aimed at those who only ever seem to pop their heads up when Islam is mentioned and, all too often, when the victims of Islamic violence are, let us say, 'of European descent.'

It is aimed at those like the fuckwhit who left a comment I saw somewhere under a story about the murder of Muslims by Buddhists in Myanmar, to the effect that any group who are against Islam are alright by him.

It is aimed at those who think branding every single Muslim in the world as a would-be terrorist is a fine and dandy idea.

It is aimed at those who wouldn't quite go that far, oh no, they're too nice to do that, but are still happy to discriminate against all Muslims 'just in case.' Because, as the torturers at Guantanamo might say, it's fine when we do it, since we're the good guys, right?

It is aimed at those who constantly and obsessively shoehorn comparisons to Islam into discussions of completely unrelated stories about the wrong-doings of other religious movements.

You get the idea. (more…)

If violence is how you show
Your highfalutin moral rectitude—
Well, please excuse, if I seem slow
Or maybe just a little bloody rude,
But it seems to me you're rather dumb.
Your logic has a certain toilet-taint.
Did you pull it from your bum?
'cause "moral" is exactly what it ain't.

I'm quite aware that my normal tone could probably best be described as "snarky bastard," so this one's something of a departure for me. How to begin…?

The last few days, I've been in pretty much of a dark place. Not, I hasten to add, that words like "clinical" would be appropriate; but, well, shit's happened and I've not quite managed my usual "if you can't fix it, don't let it get to you" bounce-back. Some of it, a major part of it, is stuff that's happened offline and I've kept mostly private, in that I've not spread it around much online (being mostly a private sorta chap). Couple that with a few nights of (possibly not unrelated) insomnia, and well… you can probably imagine that the bounce in my bounce-back would be slightly less, erm, bouncy than normal.

Then there's the online shit.

From the BBC:
