An Atheist Prays

Lord, protect me from your servants,
Who would tell me what to read.
Lord, protect me from your servants,
Who would preach at those in need.
Lord, protect me from your servants,
Who would tell me what to drink.
Lord, protect me from your servants,
Who would tell me what to think. (more…)

A Rule(ish)

Gentle Reader, I would like to inform you that I now have A Rule for commenters. Oh, okay, make it a strong guideline.

If I publish a post on the very general topic of religion, please be aware that what I'm inviting discussion of is the effect of religion on the world. When I say, for instance, that I'm talking about worship of gods, I am not talking specifically of the Abrahamic god.

I am not, as many Christian commenters seem to think, talking specifically about Christianity.

You may see the Christian religion as a special case, because you happen to believe it to be The One True Religion, but I don't, and nor do all those believers in other books and other gods. It is, I must say, frightfully presumptuous, and quite egotistical of you to assume that I'm singling Christianity out, when I didn't even mention it.

If I mean a piece to be specifically directed at Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Jainism, Mormonism, Wicca, Hinduism, Scientology, or the worship of Bo Diddley's third-best guitar, I will say so.

Religion boasts of ended fights
But fails, somehow, to note it caused
All those Shiite–Sunni wars. (more…)

The Ship Of Fools

Spurred by a dream of a heavenly throne
The Ship Of Fools sails, horizon-bound.
They could have made a Paradise at home
But Heaven's always greener in promised lands.

"Young," of course, is a state of mind, not of body. The common "wisdom" is that we tend to grow more conservative as we grow older. Our ideals for what should be, so the thought goes, are swapped, gradually, for the acceptance of what is. Of finding a niche and being comfortable in it—and not wanting those young idealists to shift us out of it.

Well, sod that for a lark.

An Ode To The Much-Maligned F-Bomb

Fuck's a many-usaged word
You can say fuck off, while flipping the bird;
You can be astounded—What the fuck?
Or groan—Oh fuck!—when you're out of luck.
When you drink ev'ry bottle in the fucking place
You're guaranteed to be fuck-faced.
Hello y'old fucker, long time no see!
It's been fucking years; have a drink on me. (more…)

Silliness

Righty-ho then, I'm back. Normal service (for a given value of 'normal') will be resumed as soon as possible, but in the meantime, here's some silliness.
